Marijana a “gateway” drug? Is it even a “drug”? Truth or lies.?

A "drug" is defined by wikipedia as: " any substance that, when absorbed into the body of a living organism, alters normal bodily function." Marijuana does alter normal bodily function, so by definition it is a drug. However, marijuana is considered a recreational drug which is defined by wikipedia as "Recreational drugs are chemical substances that affect the central nervous system, such as opioids or hallucinogens. They may be used for perceived beneficial effects on perception, consciousness, personality, and behavior Some drugs can cause addiction and habituation." Ok so pot is not an opioid or a hallucinogen. *if it is a hallucinogen I have never hallucinated after taking my medication. And I use the word medication because it is exactly that. Wikipedia descripes medicne as : "Medicine is the art and science of healing. It encompasses a range of health care practices evolved to maintain and restore health by the prevention and treatment of illness.

Contemporary medicine applies health science, biomedical research, and medical technology to diagnose and treat injury and disease, typically through medication, surgery, or some other form of therapy. The word medicine is derived from the Latin ars medicina, meaning the art of healing.

To touch on the "Gateway drug" part of my "question", the main reason that people who try pot move on to other drugs *and i know this from personal experience* is that we are lied to from when we are young about Marijuana. In China dating back almost 5,000 years doctors prescribed weed for pregenant women, those who couldn’t eat, and even to the point of curing mild psycosis. We are told that it causes psycosis. The law forbiding this medicine to be used on a mass scale in the U.S. is based on racisim. That’s right here’s some truth that you dont’ want to hear is that the U.S. is still up holding racist laws put into effect to help to diminish the immigration out of mexico and into the US. So in other words we are taught from a young age that RACISIM IS OK!! WTF. My grandmother had cancer, she was told she only had about 6 months to a year to live. She couldn’t eat *due to chemo* she was in constant pain *due to the cancer* and she was very depresed. I gave her a glass of pot milk, *which I made for her* within 30 min she was hungry, and able to hold food down. her pain became minimal, and she lived for another 3 years with continued use. Yes that’s right without going back for more chemo. She stoped taking the prescribed drugs and treatments and continiued to use mecial marijuana. Why have we been lied to about the posititve attributes about this plant? One of my friends who has MS couldn’t stand taking the medication his doctors prescribed him because it turned him into a "zombie" he started smoking pot every day 3 times a day at the same frequency of his MS pills. Since starting the smoking of pot he is more active, happier and more alert than he had been in years. So to wrap this all up, Marijuana is and isn’t a gateway drug, it is because we have been lied to our whole lives that weed is such a terrible drug that ruins lives and we have come to find out that it isn’t even close to true. The thinking then becomes that every other drug must be a lie. Yes by definition it is a drug, but in practice it is just as harmelss as a bottle of green tea. *side note: NO ONE HAS EVER DIED FROM A THC OVERDOSE!!!!! How many pain killers/anti-depressents/ anti-psychotics and other "medicines" claim the lives every year in the us? Too Many!" This is entirely met to be a disscusion. No negatives but if you differ on the writing then feel free to be intelligent and post your opinion.

The only reason pot is a "gateway" drug is because it is illegal. To get it many people have to associate with criminals who are often selling other drugs besides pot. If this was something you get at your drug store and not on a street corner from a criminal I don’t see how this would move you into taking harder drugs.

I personally don’t think it should be illegal and whatever medical potential it has can’t even be investigated because of it’s Federal schedule I status.

Marijuana has been illegal for less than 1% of the time that it’s been in use. Its known uses go back further than 7,000 B.C.

OK so first of all, stop using Wikipedia as your main source of reference because it gives incomplete and in general somewhat inaccurate definitions. Secondly, I’m not sure I understand your point on racism here, if you could expand on that then I shall comment on it then. Now, marijuana is indeed a drug as you pointed out, and is indeed a gateway drug also. The reason your grandmother and friend did not proceed onto other drugs is for 2 reasons: one, the marijuana was working as a painkiller because the main chemical, THC, is transported through your blood to the cannabinoid receptors in your brain. These receptors are usually located near the parts of your brain that influence pleasure, thoughts, coordinated movement, and sensory and time perception. Therefore, these are the parts of your body that are most affected when a "high" is experienced. Now of course, most people upon feeling this high react differently, and in the case of your friend, the pleasure associated with the drug would block out the pain, and that would be all he needs FOR NOW in order to get rid of any pain; thus he has no need to go to stronger drugs, again FOR NOW, but the day that he gets high and doesn’t feel a total relief in pain: watch out, because he will start searching for something stronger. As for your grandmother, studies have shown that the addictiveness of the drug correlates with the age that it was first tried. I’m assuming your grandmother is over 60, in which case the possibility of her becoming addicted, or trying to get stronger drugs is quite low. Marijuana is indeed a gateway drug for the majority of its drug-users, whether or not they continually use stronger drugs aside, most people who smoke marijuana will at least try a stronger drug, which is potentially dangerous in each case.
Smoking marijuana is also a totally different story, because your brain is not the only thing affected, but you can research that on your own.
As far as no deaths being directly from overdose of marijuana, that is perhaps true (I will look into it more), but there are indeed deaths linked to marijuana use, such as murders and especially suicides. Marijuana has been linked to anxiety and depression, and of course in some cases this unfortunately leads to suicide.
That is all I have to offer right now, I await another opinion.
