Will security motion detectors pick up on pets?

<< What's the best breed of dog?  ok home alone and i have this feeling...? >>

I have an alarm system with ADT. We have a motion detector, and my dad is saying that it will pick up on dogs (we’re planning on getting a dog soon), and go off.

Questions: Would there be anyway I can get a motion detector that won’t pick up on animals and go off? Or should I just keep my dog in a room while we aren’t at home?
Do you have a dog (or any other animal)? What do you do with having a motion detector in your house when you aren’t at home? Any suggestions?

I don’t feel right leaving my dog outside (especially for long periods of time). Thanks in advance.

Yes. Most standard motion detectors will pick up pets. The most common type of detector is the "passive infrared" detector which works by detecting body heat. The body of even a small dog would create enough heat to activate the detector.

There are "pet resistant" motion detectors available. These ignore pets up to a certain weight (~40 lbs). One such detector is the GE Sentrol Pet Immune PIR Motion Sensor # AP100PI (do a web search for more info.)

Some alarm installers install standard motion detectors but point them "upside down" so that the detector ignores motion close to the floor. This works OK with small animals unless they run and jump above the floor. You would be surprised at how lively animals can be when their owners are away!

yeah it does, you have to put it on ’stay’ if you put it on ‘away’ be prepared to get charged lol. mine even picked up on my cutrains when they were moving because we forgot to close the window and the wind was blowing on them.

Call or check online from the company you got the system installed from. And get your puupy from the humane society.

yes motion detectors will pick up on just about anything that moves..thats the point..high or low it should pick up the motion. a dog should be crated throughout the day and idealy stay in your room at night in the crate until it is house trained. a crate is like their home, get a big enough one that the dog can stand up in and turn a full circle in..good luck

Yes, it will pick up on pets and any other animals in the area it is monitoring.

It depends on how sensitive the sensor is, and which way it’s pointing. I have a motion sensor light on my house, and it picks up card driving by over 100 feet away. I’m sure it would get a dog at 10 feet.

Your best bet would be to ask your dad to talk with the folks from ADT. Maybe they can adjust the sensor so that it doesn’t "look" at anything less than 4 feet tall. My guess is that they would be glad to, so that they don’t get a ton of false alarms.

I would assume yes, motion is motion

check with ADT to be sure

No, they don’t weigh enough to trip the sensors. I just got one and the sensors only pick up people/animals that are at least 60kg in weigh and bigger than a breadbox.

Ours did, and they told us it wouldn’t. :( They said it woundn’t detect pets under 80 lbs and our guy was 50 lbs at the time.

After that incident (the pup was terrified and peed all over, poor guy) we either crated him at night or bypassed the living room motion detector.

Exterior ones do it all the time, so I assume interior do too. It’s become a real problem for police who spend waayyyyyy too much time chasing false alarms due to stray cats.

Yes. There should be a way to bypass the specific motion detectors. I limit the rooms that my dogs have access to and bypass just one motion detector.
