What’s the best breed of dog?

<< Installing alarm sensors regarding ADT?  Will security motion detectors pick up on pets? >>

my parents want to get a dog for security. my parents only criteria is that it isn’t tiny like a poodle but that it doesn’t grow very large. we have lots of children and friends constantly come through here (home business) so we’d like a breed that isn’t too vicious but still enough to scare away a thief. btw we have bars on the windows and an alarm system so we’re not putting the job of home security solely on a dog but we figured it’d be nice to have one as added protection. so I know it’s a tall order but what breeds do you have in mind?

Dobermans come in multiple sizes… I think there is a medium size simply called a Pincer. They are super-smart and great for protection. I’ve been looking up the same thing and my husband and I have contacted a breeder about it. Of course they are a very smart breed and are bred to be a working dog, so we will be going to obedience classes and getting a GDC. If you are a new owner of ANY dog I suggest going to basic obedience classes no matter what dog you get. I would also suggest going to your local shelter and seeing what kind of dogs they have, sometimes a mutt can look scarier than any pure-bred dog, not to mention that many of them are mixed with scary looking dogs like pit-bulls. Good luck and have fun with your new dog!

no dog is "vicious" unless it is trained to be vicious.
dobermans are amazing dogs and are surprisingly friendly!
same goes for german shepards (if you don’t mind all that hair!)
or, if you’re more concerned about fun, friendly, family dogs, go with a golden retriever or yellow lab!

You do not want a protective dog if you have a lot of visitors. It would be a liability. I would suggest a dog that alarm barks and then happily welcomes visitors. Try these breed selectors to find a breed that fits your parents life style.

Ask a vet for a reputable Chow breeder. I’vee owned dogs for 40 years and the last dog I had was a Chow for 14 years. Best obedient, well trained and only aggressive towards people when ordered to. My best friends 2 year old used to pull it ears jump on it’s belly and roll around on her and his wife would just laugh at the looks the dog gave him as if to say why do I allow this. I once pulled up to a pool store to get supplies and the kid brought them out to my car, after seeing my dogs kindness and demeanor he called out the girls to see the kind dog. She gave them all kisses. My vet said I should have breed her to make all the Chows like her. Be careful they can be especially mean and vicious if not selected properly and trained properly. My vet insisted to see her as a puppy to even decide if he wanted to be her vet.

Take any dog to a vet for observation before buying them and if approved make sure you take them to training school. Remember owning a pet is not like having a child but rather a 15 year commitment in which you may not have the unconditional love for the pet that it has for you. Be educated and beware. Go to shelter and don’t fall in love, make sure the dog is calm and walks away from distractions and towards you this is a dog that loves people. It should burry it’s head in your hand and lick it calmly.

What Marissa said is not true, some dogs are just very vicious by nature. I have made that mistake in the very very past and the dog had to be put down after attacking other dogs or sheep, not children, you can intimidate them into staying away from that but there is nothing worse that having a bloody dog fight at 3am, I was 18 and learned.

I would personally look into the American Bulldog. They are simply awesome. Great around kids and other people. Pet friendly (be careful of other male dogs, properly introduce…etc) and extremely intelligent. They are also extremely strong physically. They are used in personal protection as well as guard duty. However, in my experience with these dogs, they are just big oafs who love their family, but will defend them and do whatever they are asked at a moments notice.
