Can I get into Princeton?

<< Do you think that UGA would be a good school to transfer from to GA Tech. for Computer Sci. and Chemical Eng.?  Am I on the right track for college? >>

I’m a high school senior. I live on a cattle farm in a rural community in Arkansas. I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA. I have taken all of the most challenging classes my school has to offer. I scored a 30 on the ACT. (English: 34, Math: 31, Reading:25, Science:28)

I could easily get into any school in Arkansas, but I want to know if I have a shot at getting into Princeton or Columbia. They have sent me promotional materials, as well as Washington University in St. Louis. and Caltech.

I’m president of BETA club at our school, a member of FCA, have had a summer job mowing yards the last three years, played football 9th and 10th grade, have been a member of FFA since 9th grade, manage the sound equipment at my church, and run track.

What schools do y’all think I should apply to? I know I’ll apply to the University of Arkansas Honor’s College and Hendrix in Conway, but do I have a chance at any of these top schools?

Ivy league schools are very expensive. Because you seem to be very intelligent, I would apply for scholarships to universities that will cover your expenses. You don’t need an ivy league education, save those for graduate school. Don’t rack up debt for college quite yet.

Standardized test scores are unfortunately a limiting factor when looking at schools like Princeton and Columbia. Although 30 is in the middle 50% range at Columbia, it is near the bottom, and unless you are a minority, legacy or famed athlete, it is unlikely you will get in with a score on the lower part of that range. Realistically, you need a 33 on the ACT to be considered by those two schools. I would still suggest you apply if you really want to, but understand that they can reject you just because your standardized test scores are low on their standards.

Honestly, don’t waste money going to Princeton. Its prestige means virtually nothing when compared to just about any other college. If staying local is something important to you, you should look more at the University of Arkansas or Washington University in St. Louis. Where you get your undergraduate degree means very little. It’s more important to choose a school that you like; a school that offers you opportunities catering toward your personal desires.

For the Ivy schools, try using http://www.cappex.com/ and it’s pretty good at showing you your chances at being accepted. But you have to remember it isn’t just acceptance, after you’re accepted you have to have a way to pay for it. I would definitely apply to Hendrix; I’m accepted there and have been offered a great scholarship. It’s getting ranked higher and higher and is a great quality school.

Yes, you have a shot at them but if money’s as tight in your family as it is in most you’re going to need financial assistance from whichever one accepts you and you shouldn’t be shy about letting them know that from the get-go. It won’t color their decision about accepting you so don’t be concerned about that and how much they offer you will help you decide whether you can afford them or need to apply to the next one on your list. Good luck.
