College help. Where to apply? What do to? Location?

<< is this a good personal statement?  What universities or colleges could I get into? >>

I’m currently a senior living in California and I’m working on college applications. However, I’m having trouble with what I want to do and where I want to go. I know that I don’t need to know exactly what I plan on majoring in (so I’ve heard most people change their minds), but I don’t know what I should put down. If I put something general, would my chances of being accepted lower? And location. I still don’t know where I want to go and it’s pretty much late to college hop and look around. As of right now, I’m thinking of applying to UCs and Cal States, but I really want to go far away from home. I think I’m just applying to schools based on the names. Even when I looked up majors, I couldn’t find one that I seemed interested in.

I’m the youngest in my family and I’ve asked my cousins for advice; however, I feel that their advices didn’t help me. I also feel that I won’t get accepted to any of the colleges/universities I apply to because of my GPA (3.34) and SAT scores (1580– I took another test and I’m waiting for the new scores.) I’ve talked to my counselor, but she wasn’t helpful. I’ve talked to graduate friends, but I don’t think I can relate because 1) they have like 4.0+ GPAs and 2) their SAT scores in the 2000+.

I know that not everything is about GPAs and SATs. Yet I feel that that’s what "gets" you into college. Is my mindset screwing me up? I don’t know what to do.

Another point– I don’t really want to go to a community college, because it’s too close to home. I want to go out and just be independent and live away from my comfort zone. I don’t have anything against community colleges, but they’re just too close.

Thanks for reading this and helping. =\

Your GPA and SAT are too low for competitive college/universities, but since you don’t have a good idea about what courses to take, specific school don’t matter much, and your goal should be just to get into a decent college at least several hours from home. Nobody can presume to tell you where to go based on the little information you’ve provided, but here are some decent colleges/universities that you might consider:

    Oregon Institute of Technology
    Pacific Union College
    Menlo College
    Stevenson University
    Towson University
    San Jose State
    Virginia Commonwealth
    SUNY-Institute of Technology
    Rochester Institute of Technology
    Capitol College
    Niagara University
    Notre Dame of Maryland

If you want to go into the military go to West point in New York. You dont have to pay for anything. the military pays for your complete schooling which adds up to about $400,000.

I think you are overthinking the whole situation and letting your anxiety get the better of you. Calm down. First, many college freshmen don’t know what they want to major in. The first year of college is pretty generic and the second is not a lot more specific. Think in generalities: What classes did you like best in high school? What are your hobbies? Are you more a math person? English and lit? History? Art? Music? Teaching? Computer? Fashion? Narrow from there. Have you talked to your school counselor or taking any apptitude/interst surveys to help you? Have you gone to any job fairs?

Lacking a focus does not necessarily hurt your application – you can put liberal arts or interdisciplinary studies and be okay. In terms of geographic selection, identify all universities that are outside the perimeter of what you think is "too close" to home, but still within your state (so you don’t deal with out-ofstate tuition). As well as the large, "name" universities, apply to some smaller universities. Smaller universities often have fewer applicants and don’t demand stellar grades/scores for freshman entrance. Once you are accepted and settled, sample many courses and you will find something you love and want to pursue.
