What are some of the more popular songs for senior citizens?

<< will i make it after i graduate high school?  Do anyone knows how to find grants for homes or business? >>

I am thinking of people in assisted living and nursing homes. The age would be 80-100 years. I would be more for people who are confined rather than younger age groups that are more retirement community people that are 65-80 that live independently and it is a senior residence for their age only and they do not need medical assistance.
Do you play music at these homes? I am a musician and I have nursing home gigs. I have been out of practice for a while. I play mostly Bing Crosby and oldies from the 1920s-1940s. Any suggestions for songs, especially Bing Crosby would be helpful.
I am 47 and three years away from AARP membership. Acutally I have an associate membership from my 51 year old ex wife. If you are 40-69, you are too young for this to include you music. I am looking at targeting 80 and older. So that would be Bing, Frank, Jackie Gleason, Lawrence Welk, Shirley Bassey (interesting)

I remember what my parents and aunts and uncles liked. They would
have been from that age group. They have all passed now. But you
have probably guessed anything from the big band sound. WIth many
of the early orchestra singers. Dinah Shore, and Peggy Lee, and
Sinatra, Perry Como. And later, Andy Williams. There were country
artists too. You can google some of the oldies for a list, from Hank
Williams to Jim Reeves, and Patsy Cline. Dean Martin was also a
crooner that women loved during the 50’s, and 60’s. Yes, der Bingle
was a good crooner too, but more associated with holiday songs
as he got older. I had an uncle who went to Gonzaga with he and
his brother, Bob, who had his own orchestra. I saw Bob on TV back
in the black and white TV days. Any of the orchestras that played
those popular WWII songs would be appreciated. Glenn Miller, The
Dorseys, and Benny Goodman, and Paul Whiteman. Nat King Cole is another crooner from the 50’s and 60’s that was popular. Johnny Mathis is another that comes to mind from the 50’s to present day. And of course, Frankie was popular a long time. Also you might consider musical melodies from the musical movies that starred well known singer/actresses. Betty Grable, and Judy Garland, and Doris
Day, to name a few. If you have an electrical keyboard with the extra
sounds for background percussion and drums, etc. I’m sure you
sound like a one man orchestra. I used to know a man who did gigs
for private parties as well as some service clubs. He never played
the very old oldies though. He did the Everlys, and the Rock and Roll
era. I loved to harmonize with him on some easy sing alongs, when
he came to my mothers’ house as a guest, and to play a little. at
    a few parties she had.

I would be prone to select songs that these folks are most familiar with from church. You might play songs that are special favorites for Methodist, Baptist, Lutherans , Catholics, etc. Each denomination has particular songs that are usually more popular in their church than in another denomination. I would think that the elderly would come closer to remembering these songs than any other that you could think of.

When I’d visit my dad in the assisted living facility, the people there loved entertainment. They loved to hear polkas and the more upbeat tempo songs rather than the ballads. The more you can interact with the residents the better they like it. Even if you can "dance" with the ladies who can’t get up from their chairs they love it. I got my father up to dance when he was over 90 and he could still do pretty well. We danced to I’ll be Loving you Always.

A lot of people that age remember songs from the WWI and 1920s when they were young. Their age group 80-100 yrs old have long term memory, thats why they recall something way in the past, but not in the moment. And many of them grew up with only a Victrola and maybe a Radio, so their parents would have had a piano and everyone sings along. Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, are always popular.
