Applying to Stanford/MIT?

<< I am a high school senior with a cumulative GPA of 2.8. Can I get into FAMU??????????????  Love or College?...decisions that effect life. Please help!? >>

Hi. I am currently a Junior in high school and i am thinking of applying to Stanford in my senior year for early action.

I am korean-american. (English is my second language)

By my senior year, my expected GPA is around 4.8 out of 5.0(weighted)

My composite SAT score is 2140

Math- 800
CR- 660
Writing- 680.

My rank is 24th out of 884.

Also, my school is one of the worst high schools in this nation. (if this means anything)

For my extracurricular activities,

i have been in my church’s praise band for 5 years and i’ve been the leader of the band for 2 years.

i’ve volunteered in my local library for past 2 years consistently.

i am the regimental commander in the JROTC in my school(the top person in charge).

Played baseball for 4 years, 2 years in varsity and will play varsity football in senior year.

I have started the school’s math team.

I am in scholastic bowl team.

I have taken 4 years of math up to now (junior year including AP Calc BC and AP Statistics) and will take Multivariable Calculus and Physics in the community college.

I know i am a little shaky on my CR…

But i am confident that i can get an 800 on SAT II Math level 2.

Would my strength in math compensate the weakness i have in english?

Do you guys think i would even have a smallest chance of getting accepted at Stanford?

I REALLY REALLY want to get into Stanford and i would like to know if i would even have a chance.

Please be honest. If you guys think i have no chance at all, please tell me so and why.

Thank you guys.

P.S. If no for Stanford, how about MIT, Princeton or Brown?

You can get into M.I.T., Brown, and Stanford, but I don’t know about Princeton. That’s a tough one.

I’ll be honest. I think you are a long shot. The reason is that Stanford considers how good your high school is, and they prefer students from the most rigorous high schools.

No one from my high school had gotten into Stanford in 20 years, because my high school was considered mediocre. I supposedly had the highest SAT scores ever at my high school (740 both math and verbal) and I did not get in. The next year, two people got in – because they were recruited for sports teams.

Of course, you should still go for it. Just know (like I did) that it is a long shot. MIT and Ivies are equally difficult to get into. There is no harm in applying to them, but you really need to apply to schools you are more likely to get into, like state schools. If you live in CA, for instance, you should apply to several UCs.

Again, a lot depends on your school. Do most of the high-ranking students get into Ivy League Schools? At my school I would say no more than 5 (out of 450) each year got into a Stanford-caliber school. Some schools send dozens of students to Stanford. A lot depends on your parents too – if they went to a private college, you are a "legacy" and very likely to be accepted to the same college.

I go to one of the best high schools in the nation and we only get about two people a year that go to stanford. I’m being realistic, you have a shot, but with just like all ivies and other top unis you have to prepare yourself for rejection.
